Solar Panel Cleaning
Standard solar panel clean.
What a standard solar panel clean actually involves
A standard solar panel clean is straightforward, physical work. A technician arrives with a soft-bristle brush, a water-fed pole, and a supply of deionised (mineral-free) water. They work across every panel on your roof, loosening and rinsing away dust, pollen, bird droppings, and the general grime that accumulates on a flat-ish surface facing the Queensland sky.
Deionised water matters here. Tap water leaves mineral deposits as it dries, which defeats the purpose of cleaning. Deionised water evaporates cleanly, so the glass stays clear.
The work is done from ground level or with pole equipment where possible. On steeper pitches, or where roof access is genuinely needed, a technician will use appropriate fall-arrest equipment. The panels themselves are never stood on or leaned against with force. The whole job on a typical 6.6 kW system (around 16 to 20 panels) takes roughly 45 to 90 minutes.
When your panels in Auchenflower actually need it
Brisbane's inner west has a particular combination of things that foul panels faster than you might expect.
Jacaranda and other tree pollen is a real issue from around September through November. If you have a jacaranda or poinciana nearby (and in Auchenflower, Toowong, and Paddington, most streets do), a fine sticky film can coat your panels within days of a bloom.
Bird droppings are the bigger performance problem. A small dropping covering even 1% of a cell can cause that cell to underperform, and in some panel configurations this drags down the whole string. Crows and ibis are common in this area and they are not subtle about where they sit.
Dust and general airborne grime builds up steadily. Panels near Coronation Drive or the Western Freeway corridor may pick up road dust faster than panels on quieter residential streets.
As a rule of thumb, once a year is a reasonable cleaning frequency for most roofs in this area. Twice a year makes sense if you have heavy tree cover, a lot of bird activity, or you simply want to keep output consistent. You do not need to clean after every rain shower. Rain helps, but it does not remove droppings or pollen residue stuck to the glass.
Signs it is time: your monitoring app shows output dropping below what it did in the same season last year, you can see visible soiling from the ground, or it has been more than 12 months since the last clean.
What it costs
For most homes in the Auchenflower cluster (Auchenflower, Toowong, Paddington, Bardon, Ashgrove and surrounding suburbs), a standard solar panel clean sits in the range of $250 to $400 for a single-storey home with a typical 6.6 kW system.
A few things push the price toward the higher end of that range:
- Two-storey homes, or homes with steep roof pitches, take longer and require more safety equipment.
- Larger systems (10 kW and above) simply have more panels to clean.
- Panels that have not been cleaned in more than 12 months may need a heavier clean rather than a standard one, which is a different service and priced accordingly.
- Difficult access (limited driveway space for a vehicle, overhanging trees) can add time.
If your system has heavy baked-on grime, we will flag that before booking a standard clean, because a standard clean may not shift it fully. That is an honest trade-off worth knowing upfront.
What is included and what is not
Included:
- Soft-brush clean of all panels with deionised water
- Rinse and visual check of each panel surface
- A brief note on anything obvious (cracked glass, visible wiring issues, significant soiling patterns)
Not included:
- Inverter servicing or electrical testing
- Cleaning of panel frames or mounting rails in detail (they get a rinse but not a scrub)
- Bird mesh or proofing work (that is a separate service)
- A written inspection report (available as a separate pre-sale inspection)
Is this the right service for your roof?
A standard clean suits you if your system is less than 12 months since its last clean, you have visible but not severe soiling, and there are no signs of physical damage to the panels.
If it has been longer than 12 months, or you can see dark staining or what looks like baked-on residue from the ground, a heavy build-up clean is likely the better starting point. Spending money on a standard clean that cannot fully remove the grime is not a great outcome for you.
Queenslander-style homes in Auchenflower and Paddington sometimes have panels mounted on a second-pitch addition rather than the original roof. Access and pitch on these can vary quite a bit. It is worth describing your roof setup when you enquire so the right equipment is brought on the day.
A note on safety and insurance
Any tradesperson working on or near your roof should carry public liability insurance. It is reasonable to ask for confirmation of this before someone gets on your roof. The providers we connect you with carry appropriate cover, but you are entitled to ask for proof, and a professional will not hesitate to provide it.
Working at height carries real risk. A clean that looks simple from the ground is not the same as doing it safely. That is not a sales point, just a practical reason to use someone with the right equipment and habits.
If you are not sure whether your system needs a standard clean or something heavier, a quick description of your setup and how long it has been since the last clean is usually enough to point you in the right direction. That is a good place to start.
